Time management is an integral skill for a successful project manager. The role involves juggling multiple tasks, responsibilities, and deadlines, all while coordinating a team. Here's how effective time management plays out in project management:
Project Planning: A good project manager needs to accurately estimate the time required for various tasks and phases of a project. This ensures the creation of a realistic timeline and schedule, which forms the backbone of the project plan.
Prioritization: Not all tasks are equally important. Good project managers can prioritize tasks based on their urgency and impact on the project. This helps in allocating resources more efficiently and keeping the project on track.
Delegation: Effective time management isn't about doing everything yourself but about ensuring everything gets done. Understanding the strengths of team members and delegating tasks accordingly helps in optimizing time and productivity.
Meeting Management: Meetings are necessary but can be time-consuming. An efficient project manager ensures that meetings are well-planned, stick to the agenda, start and end on time, and yield actionable results.

Though the concept of time management as we understand it today did not exist in the 7th century, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was known for his effective utilization of time which have been captured in the Islamic tradition and can still be applied today. He balanced various roles and responsibilities efficiently. This is akin to effective time management in project management, a critical skill for ensuring project tasks are completed in a timely manner.
Prioritization: Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) prioritized his tasks based on their importance and urgency. For example, he would prioritize religious obligations like prayer and then attend to other duties. This is in line with modern time management principles, such as the Eisenhower Matrix, which prioritizes tasks based on their urgency and importance.
Balanced lifestyle: Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) maintained a balanced lifestyle despite his numerous roles as a religious leader, statesman, husband, father, and friend. He allocated specific times for worship, work, family, and rest. This balance helped him stay productive and healthy.
Early Rising: Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) used to wake up early, and he emphasized the blessings of the early morning hours. This habit aligns with modern time management and productivity advice that suggests that starting the day early leads to increased productivity.
Conistency and Routine: Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was consistent in his daily routines. His companions reported that his activities, such as prayer, eating, sleeping, and socializing, followed a consistent pattern. This regularity and predictability in daily routines are known to improve productivity and time management.
Delegation: Despite being a leader, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) understood the importance of delegation. He appointed companions to positions of responsibility, thereby ensuring tasks were completed effectively without overburdening any single individual. This is a key principle in time management, as trying to do everything oneself can lead to inefficiency and burnout.
Focus and Presence: When engaged in a task, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) gave it his full attention. Whether he was leading prayers, discussing matters with his companions, or spending time with his family, he was fully present in the moment. This focus improves the efficiency and quality of work, reducing the need for tasks to be redone.
Planning Ahead: Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) planned and prepared for tasks in advance. For instance, he planned military expeditions carefully, considering various factors to ensure success. This principle of careful planning and preparation is vital for effective time management.
